In 2024 we are marking Co-operation Ireland’s 45th anniversary by exploring our history through 45 items, people, and locations.

#45in45

Item 17: Interns

Over the years, Co-operation Ireland has been privileged to work with a diverse and passionate group of interns who have not only contributed immensely to our mission but have also grown into inspiring leaders in the field of peace building across the globe.

Our interns have always brought fresh perspectives, innovative ideas, and a deep commitment to fostering peace and reconciliation. Their energy and dedication have enriched our charity, helping us to expand our impact and reach new heights.

We are incredibly proud to see so many of our former interns now making significant strides in their careers—leading initiatives, shaping policy, and driving change in communities worldwide.

Their success stories are a testament to the power of collaboration and the enduring importance of our work. It fills us with joy when we receive in the post a PHD thesis that we have helped to inform.

Once such intern is Marie Prestgard, who after graduating went to work in development aid to support the NGO sector in Africa before returning to Ireland to begin a role in Dublin.

She told us how Co-operation Ireland helped her studies and career.

“My internship with Co-operation Ireland provided me with first-hand insight into the Northern Ireland context, enabling me to engage with both local and international stakeholders dedicated to promoting peace. I was part of a dynamic team that valued curiosity and creativity, which further inspired me to pursue a career focused on supporting individuals, communities, and organisations in building a more peaceful, just and equal society.”

To all our past interns: Thank you for your hard work, passion, and the positive change you continue to create. You will always be a part of the Co-operation Ireland family. Here’s to the future peacebuilders you continue to inspire!
