Co-operation Ireland Launches Report to Shape Future for North West Youth
Co-operation Ireland has released the latest “Voice Matters” report, unveiling community-driven recommendations for improving opportunities and support for young people in Derry/Londonderry.
The report follows months of engagement through a People’s Panel, a group of 30 randomly selected citizens, who gathered in St Columb’s Hall in April and May to discuss the central question: “How Can We Build a Better Future for Young People in the North West?”

The initiative culminated in an event held on October 17 in the hall, where participants and community members gathered to discuss the findings.
The People’s Panel, which involved interaction with a range of experts, examined key challenges and identified solutions aimed at fostering a more supportive environment for youth.
The panel’s discussions led to recommendations that now form the basis of the “Voice Matters” report, reflecting community perspectives and priorities.
Among the report’s top recommendations are: engaging youth in creating “third spaces” and services; offering motivational courses for young students, particularly those at risk of underachievement; establishing youth panels across council districts; and supporting a wider range of apprenticeships through government funding. Other proposals emphasise environmental education, diversity engagement, and strengthening civic education to empower young people in understanding political processes.
Ireland Twiggs, Project Coordinator, said, “Watching the People’s Panel come together to discuss and prioritise these issues was inspiring. The solutions they proposed are powerful because they reflect the community’s voice on what will be most impactful for young people in the North West. I encourage everyone to pay attention to these shared hopes and priorities.”
