Need

Sally Gardens, in collaboration with Youth Initiatives, identified a need for community safety awareness among a group of young people in the Colin Area. These individuals were at high risk of engaging in Anti-Social Behaviour, necessitating an educational intervention to address this issue.

Action

To meet this need, Sally Gardens and Youth Initiatives organised workshops focusing on community safety awareness. The selected group of young people had the opportunity to apply this knowledge by completing an OCN Level 1 Award in Community Safety Awareness, facilitated by the Colin Safer Neighbourhood Project workers. The workshops covered the reasons behind involvement in anti-social behaviour, the impact of such behaviour on communities, the influence of identity on personal behaviour, and methods to address community safety issues, including restorative practice and conflict management techniques. The group showed active engagement, particularly in discussions about the work of the Colin Safer Neighbourhood Project.

Result

Due to their participation in the workshops and completion of the OCN qualification, 10 young people from the Colin Area gained an OCN Level 1 Award in Community Safety Awareness.

They acquired a deeper understanding of the causes and consequences of anti-social behaviour, the impact of identity on personal behaviour, and techniques for managing community safety issues and conflicts. Post-programme, these young people have integrated into centre-based youth activities at Sally Gardens and Youth Initiatives, becoming more active in community events and activities in the Colin Area. This involvement indicates a positive shift in their engagement and contribution to the community.
