Need

In November 2022, Féile identified a need to enhance community engagement and creativity in Creggan and Brandywell. This led to organising a visit to Drogheda and Waterford for community representatives from various organisations, including Féile, Old Library Trust, Triax, North West Youth Services, Triax Neighbourhood Management Team, and Community Restorative Justice NI. The purpose was to gain insights from successful urban art initiatives like the Drawda initiative in Drogheda and the Waterford Walls Festival.

Action

Leveraging the knowledge from this visit, Féile developed a Street Art initiative for 2023 in Creggan. This programme included street art training for young people, transformation of the Creggan Shops area, creation of large-scale murals by renowned artists Emic and Friz, and the establishment of an outdoor gallery in collaboration with local schools and youth clubs. The initiative aimed to transform Central Drive and Fanad Drive into vibrant art spaces.

Result

The project received positive feedback from residents and local organisations. George McGowan from the Old Library Trust praised the community’s collaboration with Féile and the transformative impact of the artwork. Pat Concannon, Principal of Holy Child P.S, expressed gratitude for the project’s role in spreading positive messages and enhancing the community’s visual appeal. The initiative was seen as a potential catalyst for future projects and world-class art, contributing significantly to community pride and positivity.

A film documenting the project which shows what Central Drive looked like before and after the transformation is available

The project has been welcomed by residents and local organisations.

‘It is great to see the community come together to work with Feile to try and reimagine the area. Some of the art on display from small scale schoolwork to large scale murals is amazing and gives everyone involved a sincere sense of pride in Central Drive. People are coming into our building commenting on how bright, uplifting, and positive this project has been for the local community. Hopefully, this can act as a catalyst for further projects and world class art’.

George McGowan from Old Library Trust

‘It has been a privilege to be part of this project and a great opportunity to spread our school motto of ‘Every Child, Every Chance, Every Day.’ Thank you Féile Derry for brightening up our community with such positive messages and images.’’
